AONB: Dorset

Black Down Restoration

An important site for public access, with great potential for habitat restoration, Black Down needed sympathetic management.

The AONB team helped Dorset County Council purchase the site, agree a vision for its long-term management, and implement management changes that has led to the recovery of nearly 60 hectares of lowland heath and acid grassland.

Conifer clearance, Rhododendron control and reintroduction of grazing has seen nightjar numbers increase substantially and the arrival of the rare Bilberry Pug moth (Pasiphila debiliata), a first record for Dorset.
