Bracken Down
An award-winning project has pioneered re-use of bracken, helping protect the largest area of heathland in the AONB which was suffering from bracken dominating other species.
The AONB Unit pioneered a project with the landowner and a local forester to cut the bracken with a forage harvester, pile it in wind-rows and then turn it into a soil conditioner sold in local garden centres.
The project became Bracken Burn employing 4 people with the bracken being compacted into brickettes for burning.
