AONB: Dorset

Mapping the AONB

Using freely available data from the European Space Agency, the Dorset AONB has mapped existing core habitats identified ecological networks that allow us to better understand species movement through the landscape, and target advice and support where a helping hand is most needed.

The mapping has been used most recently to help prioritise actions in the South Dorset Ridgeway, where 175 hectares of priority chalk downland and heathland habitat was restored, and 220 hectares were enhanced.  This strengthened the network by making the core habitat blocks bigger and joining them together, allowing the Adonis blue butterfly and other priority species access to a greater range of high-quality habitat.
