The Art in the Landscape Project
We have been successful in securing a £15,000 grant from the Arts Council England to help AONBs build capacity to create a nationwide programme of inspiring, thought-provoking artworks set in some of the UK's most iconic landscapes. We'll be working on this over the course of 2019/2020.
Our first piece of work within the Art in the Landscape project was the National Moment on Saturday 21 September 2019. Following the appointment of project consultants, Activate Performing Arts, extensive research was carried out within and beyond the AONB network. The result was a National Art in the Landscape Strategy which you can read here.
Next Activate will be delivering training for AONB staff in how to work with artists and commission artworks. They will be drawing on their own experience as well as the wealth of experitse already within the AONB network.
There are some great examples of Art in the Landscape across our AONBs: from the biennial Wye Valley River Festival to awe inspiring landscape scale artworks in the moors of the North Pennines. This new programme will enable us to build on this good work, sharing best practice across AONBs, increasing collaboration, and ultimately, giving many more people a good reason to visit the countryside for the first time, to feel welcomed, and hopefully to return again and again.
