AONB: Chilterns

Chilterns Commons

There are 170 Commons across the Chilterns AONB, which are much loved features of the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

Through its Chilterns Commons Project, the Conservation Board has delivered 10 ecological surveys, 3 archaeological surveys and 3 geological surveys and carried out habitat conservation on 18 of the commons. 800 people attended heritage-focused workshops and 300 volunteers supported the project.

Volunteers have attended courses in hedge-laying, traditional orchard pruning and scything, ensuring that these traditional rural skills are continued.
