AONB: Suffolk Coast & Heaths

Saltmarsh Restoration

Rises in sea level have the potential to adversely impact saltmarsh that is a benefit to fish fry, birds and can contribute significantly to coastal defences. Working with the local community, landowners, the Environment Agency, Natural England, the AONB team has worked to restore, enhance, maintain and understand one of England's most precious habitat types.

Working with volunteers, Natural England and landowners the AONB has worked on projects to protect Little Tern nest sites from disturbance and predators.  As a species in decline, the Little Tern is under threat from accidental disturbance by recreational activity. The AONB work to install temporary fences on an annual basis has protected many vulnerable nest sites and raised awareness of the issue among the population.
