AONB: Anglesey

Source to Sea

Source to Sea surveyed the 10 main rivers on the Isle of Anglesey to provide evidence and a database for further action and projects to improve the riparian habitat, wildlife and trout fisheries on these rivers.

Trampling by cattle on the riverbanks was causing large quantities of silt and organic matter to enter the River Wygyr, affecting bankside and instream habitats for fish and other wildlife. Investigations into the poor quality of the bathing water at Cemaes showed that bacteria from agricultural sources in the river was contributing.

Work restored a more natural pattern of river flows to reduce silt and nutrient deposition, improved access for fish and improved ecological diversity and productivity. Stock proof fencing and drinking troughs have helped keep cattle out of the river.
