Please ensure that if using satnav to get to the university campus, that you choose the correct postcode for the area you want to park in as two postcodes serve the campus.
To access accommodation check-in, site visit meeting place or to drive to Wivenhoe House Hotel for the Wednesday Conference BBQ (limited parking available here) please use: CO7 9HT
If you are staying overnight we recommend you park in the multistorey car park or car park B as this is nearer the accommodation. Car park A should only be used if you expect to just park there during the site visit period on Tuesday 9th July.
For day delegates and those wishing to park in the North Towers car park near the conference venue - Essex Business School please use: CO4 3SQ - You should also use this postcode to give to taxi drivers if you wish to be picked up on Wednesday or Thursday close of proceedings at Conference.
For those arriving by train on Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning, there will be complimentary transfers between Colchester North train station and the University of Essex. On Tuesday, buses will leave the station at 8.25am, 9.05am, 9.30am, 10.05am, 10.30am (this is the latest shuttle bus in order to arrive in time for the 11am field trips), 11.10am and 11.25am (this is the last shuttle to coordinate with the departure of the noon field trips). We have coordinated the departure times with the mainline train arrivals on the London, Norwich and Peterborough lines.
If you are arriving on Monday between 2pm and 9pm, please advise the number of delegates and the time of your train arrival to Colchester North via email to email@example.com and we will arrange complimentary transfers.
After conference ends on Thursday lunchtime, there will be a limited number of free transfer spaces back to the train station. These will be on a strictly first come, first served basis. Please be aware that with traffic, it can take around 20-25 minutes to get to the station from the venue. Outside of the free transfer times, taxis are readily available outside the north entrance of the train station. The journey takes between 10-20 minutes depending on traffic. The cost of a one-way journey between the station and the university is approximately £8 to £10. Ask to be dropped off at the North Towers car park as there are two locations for taxi pick-ups and drop-offs. This taxi rank at the venue is right outside the Essex Business School, where our conference is being held and is a short 5-10 minute walk to the check in office (Events Essex).

If you arriving by car you will require a parking permit - click HERE for Parking permit (PDF). Please ensure you print it out, fill in the details and display it in your car when you arrive. If you are coming on the Monday, please ask at the check-in desk for an additional permit to cover the extra evening. You can park in the multistorey car park, close to the accommodation (post-code for satnav CO7 9HT), or if you are a day delegate - wishing to park closer to the venue, in the North Towers carpark (post-code for satnav CO4 3SQ).
Please arrive in good time for the departure of your field trip as buses need to depart promptly. You are asked to meet at carpark A (map below) (post-code for satnav CO7 9HT) by 10:50am or 11:50am respectively at the latest, to hear a welcome from Howard Davies. We will confirm which trip you are successfully booked on in advance of the conference. Lunch is provided on all field trips but you may wish to bring additional drinks and snacks with you. All field visits are expected to arrive back at the University for 6pm, traffic dependent.
We will automatically cater for vegetarians, but please indicate on your booking form if you have vegan, gluten free or other dietary requirements.
Monday evening early arrivals
If you have selected the additional night accommodation option for Monday 8 July, this includes both your breakfast, plus a £10 spend on a meal card (given to you at check-in) to spend on an evening meal on site.
For the evening meal on Monday the meal cards are only redeemable at two catering outlets - please choose from either Canteen or Buffalo Joes (both close at 8pm), alternatively, you can opt to travel in to Colchester by bus or taxi where there are a large number of restaurants and pubs to choose from. Please note any meals purchased off site or in outlets other than Canteen or Buffalo Joes can not be reimbursed by the NAAONB.
Tuesday evening meal
This is a hot buffet served between 7pm and 8.30pm in Fusion (first floor of square 4). A fully licensed bar is available for drinks and will be open from 6.30pm. There will be a 70@70 (70th aniversary) inspired presentation and quiz for delegates to take part in as they wish.
Breakfast can be taken at a number of concessions on the complex – the choice is yours! Upon check-in at the Events Essex office (in the corner of Square 4), you will be given a meal card to use to “pay” for your breakfast. The cost is all included in your delegate fee. Please keep the card safe. Concessions are open from 7.45am for breakfast.
This year, the Conference Dinner will be held at Wivenhoe House, approximately 10-15 minute walk from the on-site accommodation (post-code for satnav if arriving by car CO7 9HT). The meal will be an informal 2-course BBQ buffet (served indoors if the weather is poor), there will be a bar for the purchasing of drinks and a local ale, Adnams Southwold Bitter, will be on tap.
Please gather at Wivenhoe House for 7pm. Our after-dinner speaker is Kevin Bentley, former BBC reporter who will speak to us about ‘How the natural world can benefit society.’
For delegates who have booked accommodation, you will be allocated single en-suite rooms with shared kitchen facilities. Ground level accommodation can be specifically requested if required, as can accessible rooms with disabled-access en-suite facilities. The University ordinarily issues travel-sized toiletries, but we have specifically asked that they do not do this, so that we do not encourage single-use plastics or generate unnecessary waste. We are relying on you to bring your own toiletries. However, if you do forget anything, the Events Essex office will be able to assist. Towels are provided. The shared kitchen facility on each floor has an iron and ironing board for general use. The fridge will be stocked with milk. Again, we have asked the University to refrain from stocking the in-room drink-making facilities with single-use, individual milk containers.
You will need to check-in to your accommodation at the Event Essex office. The Event Essex office is in the corner of Square 4 (map below). If you arrive shortly before your field trip departs, you will be able to leave your luggage securely in the Events Essex office. If you arrive after 8pm, you will need to check in at the information office (which is also marked on the map and only a one minute walk from the Event Essex office). Checkout is by 9.30am on Thursday 11 July (unless you have pre-booked to stay an additional night) when you should return your key-card to the Event Essex office. You are able to store your luggage at the office until the conference finishes at 12.45pm. Alternatively, you can bring your luggage to the Essex Business School, but there is no secure room available for luggage storage and delegates will have to accept responsibility for any loss or damage.
Conference on Wednesday and Thursday
Conference will take place at the Essex Business School (see map below).
There is parking available outside, including for electric cars and the taxi pick up shelter is also just outside for prebooked transfers (post-code for satnav CO4 3SQ). This is also where the minibus transfer to the train station on Thursday lunchtime will depart from. Information for Day Delegates
Registration is from 8.30am at the Essex Business School. The welcome and address in the auditorium is at 10.15am. The train station (Colchester North) is approx. 10-15 minutes away by taxi, although please allow more time in the morning for rush-hour traffic.
The taxi rank is directly outside of the building. If you wish to pre-book a taxi to pick you up after the conference from 5.15pm onwards, these are some local companies:
