Landscapes for Life Conference 2021

We look forward to bringing everyone together in July – more details to follow.

Given the ongoing high levels of uncertainty regarding the pandemic, we have taken the decision to hold this year’s annual conference online. The safety of our AONB teams is paramount, and at this point in time we can’t guarantee we can run a covid-secure event at a feasible price. If life is a little more normal by July and events can go ahead, the administrative burden of running an event will be significant. It’s likely we would have to organise, pay for and staff rapid testing of all delegates, have facilities to quarantine anyone with symptoms, limit numbers to ensure distancing, and enact a host of as-yet unknown requirements. We would also have to police access, refusing entry to anyone who had symptoms or who had been in contact with someone who had the virus. As a small team, this level of unpredictability and work just isn’t feasible.

Instead we will be hosting our first ever online annual conference. It will still be ‘in’ Devon; the 5 Devon AONBs will be hosts as they would have been for a face-to-face conference, and are working to bring you to the county virtually. The conference will be held during the week commencing the 5th July, and it’s likely there will be short sessions across the week rather than one long, tiring day looking at your computer screen! It will be on Zoom – a recent survey of AONBs suggests that people can now (one way or another) access it, which wasn’t the case a year ago. And rest assured, the much-valued social evening will go ahead in a format to be confirmed!

We’ve all been to an online event that used a cracking piece of technology to get people involved – if you have seen something and know what it was, Anna Trant would love to hear about it via
